The stage is set for the third annual football encounter between S. Thomas’ College and Gateway College, with both teams vying for the prestigious Neville De Alwis – Ralph Alles Challenge Trophy. Named after two renowned educators, this trophy is a reminder of everything they stood for; camaraderie, sportsmanship and equal opportunity. Mr. Jaswer Omar, the newly elected President of the Football Federation Sri Lanka will be the chief guest and Ms. Premila Paulraj, Regional Director, Asia Pearson Edexcel will be the Guest of Honour.

This 3 rd annual encounter will be played at the new football grounds at Gateway College, Ratmalana on Saturday 22 nd January 2022. The joint organizing committee confirmed that arrangements have been made to conduct an Under 16 and Under 20 match between S. Thomas College and Gateway College and a friendly Girls Under 20 game between Gateway College and Overseas International School Colombo. S. Thomas old boys will also take on the Gateway old boys for the first time this year.

Gateway College won the last two encounters under the guidance of Coach Mr James Heath. Coached by Mr. Siddeek, S. Thomas’ displayed a marked improvement in the second encounter. Both S. Thomas’ (captained by Niven Nanayakkara) and Gateway (captained by Alan Fernando) are evenly matched with technically correct and skillful players who promise to provide spectators an interesting game, filled with healthy rivalry at this state-of-the-art facility.

Both S. Thomas’ College and Gateway College continuously strive towards the development of sports in this country. What these two schools invest in their sportsmen will not only benefit the individuals themselves, but also the schools they come from and the country they so proudly represent. In its long history, S. Thomas has produced several world class sportsmen and despite being a relatively young school Gateway too has shaped a number of athletes, swimmers, basketball, Netball and football players who have represented Sri Lanka and brought pride to our motherland.

Gateway continues to shine at Squash

Gateway juniors excelled in Squash by dominating the younger age groups at the 32 nd Junior National Squash Championship that was held recently at the Sinhalese Sports Club Complex. The eight member team of Gateway consisting of Ranuk Mendis (Under 9), Disara Dillon Perukanda & Ravith Mendis (Under 11), Manuth Dassanayake (Under 11 & 13), Bihandu Nanayakkara (Under 13 & 15), Matheesha Wijesekara & Yolen Dimath Withanage (Under 15) and Vishan Ranatunga (Under 15 & 17), under the guidance of Coach C H Thalagala, prepared for this tournament with utmost commitment.

Manuth Dassanayake (Under 11 and 13) and Bihandu Nanayakkara (Under 13 and 15) had yet another successful tournament dominating their respective age groups with ease. Matheesha Wijesekara also joined this formidable line up having secured Under 15 Boys Novices Runner-up in his debut tournament.

Manuth Dassanayake reached both the Under 11 and 13 finals during his exceptional performance in the tournament. He triumphed over Kaveen Kohombange of Stafford International School with a significant margin of 3-0 sets with scores of 11-7, 11-8, and 11-6 in the Under 11 Boys finals ranking him 1 st in this age group. In the Under 13 age group, he reached the finals to only to be beaten by his fellow schoolmate, Bihandu Nannayakara. Having secured the Runner-up position, he is now ranked 2 nd in the older age group.

Bihandu Nannayakara, having already made a name for himself in the national Squash arena, earned a well-deserved championship in the Under 13 Boys finals yet again by beating his fellow Gateway colleague 11-3, 11-8 and 11-5. He participated in the older age group (Under 15) too and reached the quarter-finals and obtained the 5 th place having beaten Tharul Pinwatta of Royal College. Matheesha Wijesekara had an outstanding debut tournament winning the Runner-up position in the Boys under 15 Novices category.
