See My Story - Akmal Fazleen

“If I had six hours to chop down a tree, I’d spend the first four sharpening the axe”. Abraham Lincoln’s idea of the level of preparation and planning required to successfully complete any task, in my mind is immortal. I believe this is what Gateway College gives its students in life; the best preparation there is to step into an erudite future and the path to pursue their dreams.

Gateway College Kandy has been home to me for all my teenage life and now I am a proud alumnus of the institution. I can without doubt say that the good characteristics, understanding and confidence the College has instilled in me is what has brought me this far in life. I will always remain indebted to all my loving teachers and the Headmaster Mr. Asoka Herath, for their efforts in moulding me into the person I am today.

Gateway Directorate works tirelessly in bringing opportunities to students that not only benefit them while they are in school, but also upon leaving school and venturing into higher education and employment. One such initiative by Dr. Alles resulted in me receiving a full Scholarship from the University of Canterbury (UC) in New Zealand, to read a 3 year bachelors degree in Commerce. Thanks to this, today I am studying at a university ranked among the top 2 % in the world and enjoying my life in a country that is considered one of the best places in the world to live . Also I am happy to mention that based on my performance , the university has appointed me as a Student Ambassador for 2012 – 2013.

With Gateway’s prolonged efforts into establishing a working relationship with Canterbury, more of its students have now been awarded with Scholarships. This connection has now resulted in a wide range of options in tertiary education to Sri Lankan students, under the Gateway Graduate School in collaboration with the University of Canterbury where its programmes are delivered to them locally.

Mr. R. I. T Alles, Founder-Chairman of Gateway College, had a dream to create students that are unique and outstanding in nature. He established Gateway College with such passion and 15 years later I am happy to be a part of that celebration.
